There's just something about a crested kikko 🤩

Astrophytum asteries cv. Kikko is a cultivar born of careful cultivation, Originating from Japan, where skilled growers meticulously bred this variant. “Kikko” loosely translates to “turtle shell” or “armor” in Japanese and is used to describe cultivars with exaggerated ribs.

The crested mutation in cacti occurs when the plant’s growth point, or apical meristem, gets damaged or experiences a genetic mutation. This disruption causes the plant to grow in an unusual, fan-like manner instead of its typical cylindrical form. The exact reasons for the mutation can vary, including environmental stress, injury, or inherent genetic factors, making each crested cactus a rare and unique natural artwork.

What does "CV" mean?

It's short for cultivar. Cactus cultivars are specially bred varieties of cacti that are highly prized for their unique and often stunning characteristics. Unlike typical cacti found in nature, these cultivars have been selectively cultivated by enthusiasts and growers in Japan to enhance certain traits, such as unusual shapes, vibrant colors, intricate patterns, and distinctive textures.

Care

Like most xerophytes from Mexico, this cultivar grows best in a high-mineral mix and requires infrequent watering. This plant thrives in light shade although it can be acclimated to full sun. Overwatering can cause the plant to split or rot.
