Geohintonia, a monospecific genus discovered in 1992, is a unique cactus with strongly ribbed, solitary stems that start as globose and gradually become columnar. Geohintonia blooms with rich pink to magenta flowers, which open during the day and sit atop the plant. These flowers appear intermittently throughout the warm months, and the fruit, hidden in the apical wool, is ovoidal, thin-walled, and pale, ultimately drying and breaking off below the middle.

Care

Requires strong sun to part sun to develop good compact growth. Protect from freezes by either covering or bringing inside. Water through spring and summer but it is best to leave it mostly dry through winter to avoid rot.
