Mammillaria crucigera (flowering age)

Mammillaria crucigera's rarity and fascinating growth pattern make it one of the most sought-after Mammillarias among collectors. This globular cactus can grow solitary or in clumps, and is notable for its dichotomous branching, where a single head forks into two. The habitat where this species grows is highly specialized and fragile, typically found on easily eroded cliffs, leading to high mortality rates and a continuing decline in wild populations. The small spines of Mammillaria crucigera form a distinctive cross pattern, setting it apart from the more common Mammillaria crucigera subsp. tlalocii.

Care

Care must be taken with watering as Mammillaria crucigera is prone to rot and requires excellent drainage. Water sparingly during the growing season and keep the cactus very dry during winter.
