Aztekium ritteri is a fascinating and unique type of cactus native to the rocky slopes of northeastern Mexico. This small, slow-growing plant usually measures just a few inches in diameter. Its surface is marked by intricate ridges that spiral around the plant, giving it a beautifully textured look. These ridges are lined with tiny white or yellowish spines, adding to its delicate appearance. The cactus often has a grayish-green color, which can sometimes appear almost white due to a fine layer of natural wax that protects it from the sun.

One of the most enchanting features of Aztekium ritteri is its flowers. Despite its small size, it produces lovely, funnel-shaped blooms that are usually pink or white, emerging from the top of the cactus and adding a splash of color to its interesting form. This cactus is highly valued by enthusiasts and collectors for its beauty and the challenge it presents in cultivation, requiring specific growing conditions to thrive, including well-draining soil, careful watering, and plenty of light.

Care

Requires strong sun to part sun to develop good compact growth. Protect from freezes by either covering or bringing inside. Water through spring and summer but it is best to leave it mostly dry through winter to avoid rot.
