Astrophytum asterias cv. Super Kabuto f. variegata
This pot is home to three cultivars of Astrophytum asterias.
There are two“Super Kabuto”, a hybrid created from a wild plant with unusually large markings. These plants are known for their ornate, over-sized markings on the epidermis which will become more pronounced with age.
The third, smaller plant is a variegated version of asterias. The lack of chlorophyl in parts of the plant creates beautiful yellow-to-red tones depending on light and weather.
Like most xerophytes from Mexico, this cultivar grows best in a high-mineral mix and requires infrequent watering. This plant thrives in light shade although it can be acclimated to full sun. Variegated plants burn easily and should be kept in light shade. Overwatering can cause the plant to split or rot!
