Ariocarpus retusus v. furfuraceus x cv. "cauliflower"

Ariocarpus are desert plants that grow mostly in Mexico. These geophytes are commonly called “living rocks” due to their ability to mimic the surrounding geology and blend in.

This particular plant is a hybrid of Ariocarpus retusus and Ariocarpus retusus cv. “Cauliflower”. Cauliflower is a form with extremely exaggerated texture on the tubercles. Retusus is the largest and fastest growing species of Ariocarpus.

Care
Like most xerophytes from Mexico, this cultivar grows best in a high-mineral mix and requires infrequent watering. This plant thrives in light shade although it can be acclimated to full sun. Overwatering can cause the plant to split or rot! These go dormant in the winter months and will bloom just before.  You can water lightly once a month during the winter.

Handmade lightly speckled stoneware pot in three tones. The drippy bright blue at the base and the glossy white upper half have been irregularly applied in contrast to the neat lines of the form and the smooth edges of the Ariocarpus. The glossy/glassy upper half subtly contrasts with the rough lower half.
